Specification
& Consultancy

Ligature-resistant specification support for architects, NHS trusts, facilities managers, and contractors.

Mistakes with specification are easy to make. For designers and architects that don't do frequent mental health or secure design, the product specifics can be very tricky. And a non-compliant washroom that does not meet HTM 64 or anti-ligature standards is not just a compliance issue. It's a safety issue.

Product catalogues answer the question of what a fixture is. They do not address whether a fixture is suitable for your project, how it will work with other fittings in the room, or whether the entire layout will pass review. That is a separate type of knowledge, and if you're not in that field on a daily basis, it can take a long time to acquire.

We assist architects, NHS trusts, facilities managers, and contractors on mental health units, secure wards, CAMHS facilities, and other behavioural health environments in the specification and consultancy process. The idea is simple: validate that the right products have been selected and ordered, not after it is too late.

What the Service Covers

We take on your project from the specification stage and work on the entire project. This includes the washroom layout review, determination of product categories that must be anti-ligature compliant, and the selection of fittings and fixtures appropriate to the environment.

The anti-ligature washroom isn't merely a collection of compliant individual products. Everything has to work together. An integrated tap and basin shroud that leaves a gap behind the basin has simply created an attachment point. A ligature-resistant toilet with standard accessory rails nearby is a purpose-defeater. Specification in this sector has to be room-focused rather than item-list focused.

Where HTM 64 compliance concerns, and in NHS mental health settings this is always the case, we ensure the specification fully incorporates the standard. Heights, clearances, permissible materials, types of fixings. There's a lot of detail that isn't captured in a product data sheet and it does get quite technical.

We can look at a draft specification if you have one. If you are starting from point zero, we can assist with that too. The outcome is a product list to take to procurement, or to a contractor with a level of confidence.

Who It's For

Architects

Taking on their first project in mental health or secure environments and needing specialist guidance on ligature-resistant specification.

NHS Trusts & Facilities Managers

On washroom refurbishments who wish to confirm the product selection is correct before the work commences.

Contractors

Who wish to check a specification and confirm it for compliance prior to placing an order.

This is not a commercial exercise. If a product within our range is not suitable for your project, we will inform you.

How to Initiate

There is no prescribed structure for the first discussion. Provide some details about the project — the context, the size, and your position in the design process — and we will figure out how we can assist you.
